The Swiss psychiatrist and philosopher, Carl Jung, named these patterns "Archetypes" and spent his life's work exploring them in the art, mythology, religion, literature and symbol systems of world cultures as well as in the dreams and waking consciousness of his clients. Because the archetypal essences reside deep in the unconscious, we are often unaware of both their positive potential and their shadow manifestations. When the archetypes are unrecognized, dishonored, or repressed, personal and collective shadows result, causing us to suffer varying degrees of dis-ease in body, mind and spirit. Through identifying and working with archetypes, we may better understand why we make the choices we make in careers, relationships, and lifestyles. We better understand both the fears and longings that drive our existence. We further uncover repressed potentials, which can be transformed from Shadow, an un-integrated or distorted form of the archetype, into a productive and creative expression of wholeness.
